# Set up your menu during onboarding

> Import a menu or add the first category and item from the onboarding checklist.

Finish the menu task by importing a menu document or manually creating at least one category and one item.

## Who can do this?

The onboarding checklist is available to the shop **Owner**. The underlying menu creation APIs also allow Managers, but they manage the menu from the normal **Menu** page rather than the owner-only onboarding pill.

## Where to do it

Open the setup pill in the Management Admin App and choose **Set up your menu**.

## Choose an onboarding path

1. On the upload screen, add a supported menu file if you want Tapp to parse it.
2. Keep the setup panel available while the file is processed. You can close it; the setup pill continues showing the importing state and reopens the result when processing finishes.
3. Review the created menu after a successful import.
4. Alternatively, choose **Skip, I'll add manually**.
5. In the manual flow, add at least one category and continue.
6. Add the first menu item. Select a category, enter the required item information, price and VAT choice, then save it.
7. Continue after at least one item exists.

The checklist only marks the menu task complete when both a category and an item exist. Creating an empty category is not enough.

The upload screen is not counted as one of the two manual steps. If you skip it, the wizard presents categories as step 1 and the first item as step 2. A completed import invalidates the menu queries so the generated records can appear without starting another upload.

## Platform notes

Menu setup is performed on management web. Saved categories and items feed the staff POS and, when guest visibility is enabled, guest ordering. An item or category hidden from the website can remain available to staff POS.

## Market notes

VAT choices come from the selected store market. Do not copy a GB tax choice to a German item without confirming the correct option.

## Troubleshooting

If an import fails, remove the failed file or switch to the manual category/item flow. If the checklist remains incomplete after import, refresh Menu and verify that at least one category and one item actually exist.
