# Choose how tips are shared

> Select who receives tips and understand how check-in and saved shop settings affect the result.

Choose the rule for future tips. Changes do not redistribute existing shares, and a recorded share does not confirm payout.

## Who can do this?

Owners and Managers can change tipping settings; Staff cannot.

## Where to do it

Check the shop. In the mobile app, open **Shop → Tipping → Tip split → Who receives tips**.

## Choose and save a rule

1. Choose **The team member taking payment**, **Everyone on shift**, or **People on shift with selected competences**, then choose **Done**.
2. For the last option, open **Competences** and choose at least one active work role. Choose **Done** to return these choices to the settings page. A person needs at least one of the selected roles to join that group.
3. Check the other tipping settings on the page, including suggested amounts. They must also be valid before you can save.
4. Choose **Save changes** and wait for completion. Reopen to check the saved rule and roles.

Closing a picker without **Done** discards its latest selections. The page still needs **Save changes**. **Allow guest tips** saves separately and immediately.

## What “on shift” means

The group consists of eligible team members currently checked in at this shop when Tapp assigns the tip. A scheduled shift alone is not enough. Someone who has not checked out can remain in the group after their scheduled finish time.

Shares are equal, with any remaining pennies or cents distributed so the shares add up to the complete tip. The rule does not weight shares by hours worked. Keep check-in and check-out records accurate; correcting attendance later does not automatically recalculate an existing share.

## Exceptions to the selected group

The person taking payment means the person linked to handling the order. For mobile checkout tips, this is usually the person who recorded the tip choice. Removing that person from the shop team does not necessarily prevent a share.

* With **The team member taking payment**, an eligible person receives the tip even without a current check-in. If that person is missing or excluded as an owner, Tapp tries the eligible checked-in team instead.
* With either group option, a saved shop setting can also include the person taking payment even if they are outside the selected group. This is enabled by default.
* If the selected group is empty, an eligible person taking payment receives the tip as a fallback, even when the extra-person setting is off.
* Owners are excluded by default. Existing shops can have a different saved setting. If nobody qualifies, the tip remains unassigned; it is not automatically given to an owner.

The mobile screen preserves the saved owner and extra-person settings but does not offer switches to change them. Contact Tapp support if those settings need checking against your team's written tipping policy.

Older tips may record whoever completed the order as the recipient. Check their recorded recipients; current settings do not explain every past assignment.

## Platform notes

In the web app, open **Tipping** from the side menu. Under **Who receives tips?**, select a rule directly. For **Selected competences on shift**, tick at least one active work role, then choose **Save changes**. No **Done** panel is used. Role counts show assigned people, not current attendance or final tip recipients. **Count unavailable** does not mean zero. If roles fail to load, existing selections are retained; retry before changing them.

Checkout tips are assigned when payment is recorded. Tips added through the guest ordering page are assigned when the order is completed, or immediately if already completed. The settings and check-ins at assignment time determine the group.

## Market notes

The sharing controls apply in Great Britain and Germany. Shares use the shop's currency. Keep your team's written tipping policy available to them.

## Troubleshooting

Retry loading work roles before saving. For unexpected shares, check attendance, roles, the person handling the order and the owner setting. For an unassigned tip or an unclear result, contact Tapp support before assuming it has been distributed.
