Choose the VAT code supplied for the shop’s operating market whenever you create or edit a menu item.

Who can do this?

Full item editing is authorized for Owners and Managers. Staff cannot change an item’s VAT through the availability-only endpoint.

Where to do it

Open Menu, then add or edit an item. The VAT/tax selector sits with the tax-inclusive price.

Select VAT

  1. Confirm that the correct shop is active. The shop determines the market used to load VAT reference data.
  2. Enter the item price including VAT/consumption tax.
  3. Open the VAT selector.
  4. Choose the correct market-specific code and percentage for the item.
  5. Save the item.
  6. Reopen it and verify the stored choice when the product is tax-sensitive or was created by AI import.
The backend treats vat_code as the source of truth and derives the percentage from it. The form can fall back to matching an older percentage, but new edits should use a valid code. For an older or imported item, explicitly reselect the correct current code instead of relying on the percentage fallback. Switching shops reloads reference data for that market, so verify the shop name before editing a series of products.

Market notes

GB and Germany use different VAT-code namespaces and can use different tax labels. Never select a German or GB code solely because its percentage looks familiar. Ask the responsible tax adviser which code applies; Tapp documentation cannot determine the tax classification of your product.

Platform notes

The chosen VAT contributes to totals and receipt/order tax information in POS, guest checkout and History. Fast Charge has its own per-charge VAT selector. Changing an item’s category does not automatically change its VAT code.

Troubleshooting

If the VAT list is still loading, wait rather than saving a guessed value. If no valid choice appears, confirm the shop market and escalate the reference-data problem.
