Organize menu items into categories and control whether each category is visible to guests.

Who can do this?

The category create, update and delete APIs authorize Owners and Managers. Staff can read categories but cannot manage them. A visible Menu link does not grant Staff write access.

Where to do it

Open Menu, then choose Manage categories.

Create or rename a category

  1. Enter a category name in the add field.
  2. Add it. Blank names are not submitted.
  3. To rename, select the edit control beside the category.
  4. Enter the new title and save. You can cancel without saving.

Control guest visibility

Use the visibility switch on a category. Turning it off hides that entire category from guest ordering while keeping it and its items available for staff-side use. Item-level guest visibility can hide an individual item as well.

Delete a category

  1. Select delete beside the category.
  2. Review the confirmation, including the number of contained items.
  3. Confirm only if the category and its items should be deleted.
The confirmation explicitly warns that contained items are also deleted. Move items to another category first if you need to keep them. After any mutation, the UI refreshes the category query and reports success or failure. If another authorized user changes the same category concurrently, reload before retrying. Effective guest visibility combines the category setting with each item’s own visibility.

Platform notes

Category changes are made on management web and propagate through the API to POS and guest menus. Cached screens may need to refresh before showing the latest order or visibility.

Market notes

Category behavior is shared in GB and Germany. Tax configuration belongs to each item, not to the category.

Troubleshooting

If a mutation fails or another authorized user changed the category, reload the category list before retrying. Before deletion, verify the item count in the confirmation; move any items you need to keep into another category first.
