Choose whether the mobile app asks guests for a tip. Your local choice applies to this account and shop on this device. It starts enabled when you have not saved a choice, but the shop and device permissions still apply. Check it again when using another account, shop or device.

Who can do this?

Owners, Managers and Staff can change their own local preference. Only Owners and Managers can manage the permission for other registered devices in the shop.

Where to do it

In the mobile app, open Profile settings. Find Guest tipping and Ask guests for a tip on this device. Managers can also open Store Devices from Profile settings to manage registered devices.

Change your local preference

  1. Select the shop where you will take payments.
  2. Open Profile settings and find the tipping switch.
  3. Turn Ask guests for a tip on this device on or off. The change saves on this device without a separate Save button.
  4. Check for a loading or saving error. Reopen the page to confirm the preference before starting a fresh checkout.
Turning this on does not override the shop’s settings or a manager’s restriction on the device. Turning it off does not disable tipping for everyone else in the shop. You can use this local preference even when this installation has no registered device entry.

Allow tipping on a registered device

As an Owner or Manager:
  1. Open Profile settings, then Store Devices.
  2. Identify the correct device by its name and platform.
  3. Leave Edit mode with Done if delete buttons are showing, then change Allow tipping on this device on its card.
  4. Wait for the update to finish. If an error appears, refresh the list and check the saved value before trying again.
This permission saves immediately. Allowing tipping still lets the person using the device turn off their local prompts. After a permission change, reopen the mobile app’s settings on the affected device and check its current state before relying on the next checkout.

Why the switch may be unavailable

The shop must allow guest tips and enable prompts on POS devices. Tapp must also have prompts available. Owners and Managers can check these settings under Shop → Tipping, or use Manage tipping when shown. If the page cannot load the shop’s settings, retry with a working connection. A disabled switch is not necessarily proof that your saved local choice is off. If your preference could not be loaded or saved, tipping pauses. Choose Try again and wait for the error to clear. This reloads your saved preference; check the switch again because the change that failed may not have been saved. If a notice says tipping is disabled for this device, ask an Owner or Manager to check its permission in Store Devices.

Platform notes

In the web app, open Devices and use the device’s Tipping switch. Changes save immediately; wait before toggling again. An off, disabled switch can reflect unavailable shop/device data or a disabled shop prompt, without proving the saved permission is off. Reload and check the shop settings before retrying. Shop settings, registered-device permission and your local preference are separate. Enabling all three still does not guarantee a prompt for every order or payment method. Do not change these controls to retry an uncertain payment; check the order’s payment status first.

Market notes

The controls apply in Great Britain and Germany. Changing a device preference does not change suggested amounts, the currency or how recorded tips are shared.

Troubleshooting

If you manage one shop but are Staff in another, the mobile Store Devices link may not match your selected-shop role. An Owner or Manager can use the web app’s Devices page to check the registered-device permission. If the displayed state remains unclear, check the selected shop and account, reopen settings and contact Tapp support. Do not assume that changing a switch has cancelled, refunded or altered a tip already recorded.
