Guests can choose a tip during supported mobile checkout. Saving a tip does not collect payment; wait for the payment result.

Who can do this?

Owners, Managers and Staff can take payment for orders in their shop. The guest chooses whether to leave a tip. Owners and Managers control the shop’s tipping settings.

Where to do it

In the mobile app, prepare the order and choose a payment method. If the order and device qualify, Add a tip? appears before payment starts. Check the order and shop before handing the device to the guest.

Let the guest choose

  1. Ask the guest to review the displayed order amount.
  2. Let them select a suggested amount, or choose Custom if available. Custom entry offers Percent and Amount; check the displayed limit and calculated amount.
  3. Let them choose Add tip to confirm, or No tip to continue without one.
  4. Wait while the choice saves. If it fails, follow the displayed message; Try again retries the choice. If the selection is no longer available, choose another amount.
  5. Check the updated payment total and complete the selected payment method. Confirm the payment result on the same order.
Suggestions depend on the order amount; fixed suggestions above the limit are not offered. A changed total may require a fresh tip choice. Review it with the guest.

Change a tip before payment

When Change tip is available in the payment choices, use it to remove the pending tip. Wait for the update, then choose the payment method again to make a new selection. Merely opening the payment choices does not remove the existing tip. Changing a tip is unavailable while a payment request is active or the order cannot be edited. Follow the message and refresh the order; do not start another payment to bypass the restriction. A collected tip needs the appropriate refund process, not this control.

Return the device to staff

The guest can choose No tip. To skip the prompt as staff, hold Staff and confirm the displayed question. Normal back or swipe-to-close actions do not dismiss this screen. After inactivity, the handheld prompt can show Still there?. Hand the device back to staff and use the staff control to continue. The timeout does not automatically start payment.

Why a prompt may not appear

If tipping settings cannot load or take too long, checkout can continue without showing the prompt. A missing prompt does not prove that the guest declined. Check the final amount before collecting payment. The shop and device must permit prompts. The app also skips the prompt for orders without a positive amount, a pending or collected tip, or an already recorded prompt decision. Paid or cancelled orders do not receive a new checkout prompt. Choosing Pay later or sending payment to another device does not prompt on the sending device. Cash only prompts when the shop permits cash tips. If a message says a tip was removed because cash tips are unavailable, collect the updated cash total.

Platform notes

A terminal can show a full-screen tip prompt. Hold Staff and enter the staff PIN if requested to skip it without leaving terminal mode. The PIN entry can close after 10 seconds of inactivity; reopen it and wait for any lockout countdown. The tip prompt itself has no handheld inactivity timeout. The guest ordering page has a separate flow.

Market notes

The flow applies in Great Britain and Germany. Check the displayed shop currency and final payment amount, including the tip.

Troubleshooting

After an error saving or removing a tip, refresh the same order and check the tip and total. The change may already have saved. If tipping becomes unavailable, the app may return you to payment choices. Check the current total before choosing again. If the guest reports a charge or the payment result is uncertain, check History and contact Tapp support before collecting money again.
