Record an item’s cost to make the menu’s margin information more useful. Cost is optional and separate from the price your customer pays. Leaving it blank means the cost has not been recorded.

Who can do this?

Owners and Managers can edit item costs. Staff cannot change the full item details.

Where to do it

In the web app, open Menu, select an item and find its optional cost field. You can also enter the cost when creating an item.

Record the cost

  1. Check the selected shop and item.
  2. Enter the cost for one unit using a decimal point, such as 3.50. Use a nonnegative amount with no currency symbol. Check the saved value because a decimal comma can be read incorrectly.
  3. Keep the customer price in its separate price field.
  4. Save the item and return to Menu’s list view in a wide enough window to see the cost and margin columns.
  5. Check the cost displayed beneath the standard price and the margin column.
  6. Reopen the item when its cost changes.
Leave the field blank if you have not recorded the cost. Use zero only when zero is the value you intend to record. An unknown cost and a recorded zero have different meanings in the reports. To remove a recorded cost, clear the field and save the item.

Understand the menu margin

The Menu list subtracts the recorded unit cost from the standard selling price. It also shows a percentage when the standard price is above zero. If cost is missing, the margin appears as a dash. This is a quick item-level comparison. It is not the shop’s net profit and does not include all operating expenses. It uses the standard price, so it is not a separate margin calculation for every price-list amount in the row. Analytics provides more detailed menu reporting. In the mobile menu report, select All categories to see the missing-cost notice when available. It lists up to five items without a calculated margin, ordered by revenue, with a count of further items. Add costs on the menu page opens the product menu, not an individual item editor. An absent notice does not prove complete costs: it is hidden with a category filter, missing data or no matching rows. Read the report notes before comparing it with the Menu column.

Platform notes

Edit costs in the web app. When you change a price-list amount to below a recorded cost, Tapp asks you to review it. You can cancel an accidental entry or confirm an intentional price. In the item editor, cancelling that warning skips the price-list change; it does not undo item details already saved. A warning that the item cost exceeds the standard price is advisory and does not prevent saving. No below-cost warning can be based on a cost you have not entered. In the mobile app, open Products from the shop screen and choose a category. Each item card shows Margin beneath its price: the standard selling price minus the recorded unit cost, with a rounded percentage when the price is above zero. A dash means no margin can be shown. These cards do not calculate separate margins for each price list.

Market notes

Enter cost in the selected shop’s currency. Do not copy an amount from a shop using a different currency without reviewing it.

Troubleshooting

If margin shows a dash, check whether cost is blank. If a new cost fails to save, reopen the item and confirm its stored value before relying on a report.
