Compare categories to see which parts of your menu contribute item sales and revenue. Check what each column counts before comparing it with an order total.

Who can do this?

Owners and Managers can view the breakdown for their shop. Staff access to personal reporting does not include these shop-wide comparisons.

Where to do it

  1. In the web app, open Analytics and choose Menu & Products.
  2. Check the shop, select All categories and choose the main reporting period.
  3. Scroll to Breakdown and the category table beside it.
  4. Choose Transactions or Revenue above the ring chart. The rows reorder from largest to smallest for that measure.
  5. Read the percentage columns and the figures under Amount / Revenue. The slash separates a count and a money amount; it is not a division or average.
The chart starts with Transactions selected. Changing the measure, category, period or loaded results can reset the selection to the first row. The center rounds percentages to whole numbers; table percentages show one decimal place.

Understand the All categories figures

In this web view, Transactions and Txns refer to item quantities, not distinct orders. An order containing three coffees contributes three units to the coffee category. The transaction percentage is the category’s included units divided by included units across all categories. Revenue uses the included items’ recorded line totals. Its percentage compares each category with the sum of those included category totals. These figures include items from orders currently paid or completed, using completion time when available, otherwise submission or creation time. Orders in a refund state are excluded. The report uses current category membership. Moving items between categories can change historical comparisons. Items that can no longer be matched to a current menu item and category are omitted. Categories with the same title are combined in this view. Use order statistics for order counts and averages. Category quantities are a different measure, and their item revenue is not necessarily the whole order total.

Open a category’s items

Click a category’s chart segment or table row. When its name matches a current category, the report selects that category and shows its item breakdown. You can also use the category selector at the top of the page. In the item view, selecting a row or segment highlights that item and displays its percentage; it does not open the item editor. Choose All categories to return to the category comparison and restore the whole-menu charts above. The item view uses separately prepared figures. Its matching period label does not guarantee the same update time or totals as the All categories view. Check the view before comparing amounts or assuming the same meaning for a count.

Platform and market notes

These steps describe the web breakdown. In the mobile app, the breakdown has its own period selector, initially seven days. Tapping a segment selects its percentage; use the category control to switch to items. Mobile category figures are also prepared separately from the web All categories figures. Do not assume identical totals or refresh timing. The web All categories calculation filters to the shop’s currency; check the shop and currency when comparing locations.

Troubleshooting

Use retry when the web chart or table shows an error. If a category segment does not open its items, select the category from the page’s category control. An empty ring or Awaiting your first sale message does not prove that the shop has never sold anything. The selected period or measure may have no positive total. A zero or placeholder during an incomplete load is not a confirmed result. Refresh, check the period and contact Tapp support if figures remain unexpected.
